Photonic Integrated Circuits 1: Fabless Design within the AIM Photonics Foundry

RITx Course
CE-ECOM-6000

Design a photonic chip using industry-standard tools and prepare it for real-world fabrication through AIM Photonics' 300 mm wafer foundry.

10 Weeks
Senior Level

Course description

Step into the future of optical communication by gaining expertise in the design of Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) in a real-world, fabrication-ready environment. This immersive 6-week course walks you through the full process of creating a fabless PIC design using commercial Photonics Simulation Software and Electronic-Photonic Design Automation (EPDA) tools.

You'll begin by exploring key silicon photonic building blocks such as waveguides, bends, combiners, and couplers. From there, you'll learn to model and simulate both passive and active components, including an electro-optic modulator and photodetector.

Through hands-on projects and guided instruction, you'll develop a layout and perform a design rule check (DRC) to ensure your chip is ready for manufacturing. By the end of the course, you will have designed a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) chip that includes a transceiver and prepared it for submission to AIM Photonics' 300 mm wafer Multi-Project Wafer (MPW) run.

This course bridges academic knowledge and industry practice, giving you applied skills that open doors in high-growth sectors such as telecommunications, quantum technologies, and biomedical sensing.

Course outcomes

  • Design Passive Silicon Photonic Devices
Simulate and model waveguides, bends, splitters, and couplers for silicon photonic circuits.
  • Model Active PIC Components
Design and simulate an electro-optic modulator and photodetector within an integrated circuit layout.
  • Apply Industry-Standard EPDA Tools
Use commercial design software to complete layout, modeling, and system-level simulation.
  • Perform Design Rule Checks (DRC)
Validate your design for manufacturability using AIM Photonics’ DRC standards.
  • Integrate Subsystems into a Functional Transceiver
Combine passive and active elements into a working PIC transceiver design.
  • Develop a Foundry-Ready Layout
Prepare a complete chip layout compatible with AIM Photonics' MPW submission standards.
  • Document and Review Design Workflow
Track your end-to-end process from concept to layout using industry documentation practices.
  • Submit a PIC Design for Fabrication
Complete and prepare your final design for AIM Photonics' fabrication submission process.

The learning experience

This course is for professionals, graduate students, and early-career engineers with a background in photonics, optics, or electrical engineering. You should be comfortable with basic circuit theory and familiar with simulation tools or software design environments. You'll gain hands-on experience through guided labs, live instruction, and project-based learning using commercial EPDA tools. A completed design submission to AIM Photonics caps the experience, making it ideal for anyone seeking real-world photonic design credentials.
