Course description

In Semiconductors & Society, you’ll be introduced to the principles of semiconductor technology while exploring its pervasive impact on society. You’ll gain insights into the scientific, technological, manufacturing, economic, and ethical dimensions of semiconductors and their applications throughout the course. Topics you’ll cover include semiconductor technology, materials, manufacturing, and supply chains as well as the impact of semiconductor technology on sustainability and society as a whole. In addition, you’ll cover how AI technologies are impacting the semiconductor industry and other insights from the semiconductor industry.

During this course, you’ll have short or long answer questions about the weekly topics for homework. There will also be small quizzes throughout the course as well as a final comprehensive exam at the end of the course. Generally throughout the course you will work independently, but there are opportunities for collaboration as well as discussion board posts where you’ll interact with your classmates during the course.

  • Understand Semiconductor Fundamentals
    Understand and be able to explain the fundamental properties of semiconductors and semiconductor technologies.
  • Describe Semiconductor Devices
    Describe the role of semiconductor devices as well as their role in various sectors of societal impact such as energy and artificial intelligence.
  • Analyze Historical Trends
    Analyze the historical development and significance of semiconductor technology. 
  • Evaluate Economic Impact
    Evaluate the economic impact of the semiconductor industry globally and locally. 
  • Understand Ethical Concerns
  • Discuss ethical considerations surrounding semiconductor use, including privacy and equity.

The learning experience

This course is designed for anyone who has a high school diploma or equivalent looking to start a career in semiconductors and microelectronic engineering. It’s also well suited for those who have associate degrees and anyone already working in the semiconductor industry not involved in the cleanroom and fabrication components of this field. Though prior knowledge of semiconductors and microelectronics would be beneficial, there are no prerequisites for this course aside from a high school diploma or equivalent. Please note that knowledge of calculus is not required for this course.
