Photonic Integrated Circuits 2: Sensor Design and Fabrication within the AIM Photonics Foundry

RITx Course
CE-ECOM-6001

Design a photonic sensor chip using AIM Photonics’ PDK and prepare a layout ready for fabrication using the 300 mm wafer foundry.

Online
3 Weeks
Senior Level

Course description

Integrated photonics is transforming how we sense the world. From medical diagnostics to industrial process monitoring, photonic integrated circuits (PICs) offer compact, low-cost, and high-performance sensing solutions. This hands-on, 6-week online course introduces you to the fabless design of silicon photonic sensors and walks you through the entire process of creating a sensor chip ready for real-world manufacturing.

You’ll work with AIM Photonics’ process design kit (PDK) and focus on three common photonic sensor designs: microring and Mach-Zehnder interferometers, spiral waveguide absorption sensors, and digital Fourier transform spectrometers. For each, you’ll learn the theory, modeling approaches, and layout strategies that drive functional sensor design.

By the end of the course, you will produce a complete chip layout suitable for AIM Photonics’ Multi-Project Wafer (MPW) submission. Whether you're in research, industry, or a career pivot, this course will equip you with in-demand skills to lead in the fast-growing field of integrated photonic sensing.

Course outcomes

  • Model Integrated Photonic Sensors
Simulate and analyze sensor designs such as interferometers and spiral waveguides using AIM’s PDK.
  • Design PICs for Sensing Applications
Translate sensing requirements into circuit architectures and detailed layouts.
  • Use AIM Photonics Design Tools
Apply commercial EPDA tools and the AIM educational PDK to complete full sensor designs.
  • Implement Layout for Fabrication
Create and validate photonic layouts suitable for tape-out and manufacturing.
  • Evaluate Sensor Design Tradeoffs
Compare performance, sensitivity, and size across multiple sensor architectures.
  • Integrate Components into Complete Systems
Combine sensing elements with supporting photonic components to build full systems.
  • Document a Photonic Design Workflow
Capture your design process and decisions to support fabrication and future iteration.
  • Prepare a Fabrication-Ready Tape-Out
Finalize a sensor PIC layout and submit it for AIM Photonics MPW manufacturing services.

The learning experience

This course is for engineers, graduate students, and professionals with a background in optics, photonics, or electrical engineering who want to specialize in sensing applications. Familiarity with photonic design principles and circuit simulation is recommended. You’ll complete weekly design challenges and build a real PIC sensor layout through guided instruction and project-based learning. Access to EPDA tools and AIM Photonics’ PDK will be provided as part of the course.
